Development and refinement of technologies of herbicides application in open-bed nurseries
Without weeds effective removal it is unlikely to grow high-quality planting material of coniferous and broadleaved tree species. The weeds pulling is very laborious and the mechanical handling is not always possible to carry out. The most promising solution of this problem is the application of the modern herbicides system of different mechanism and action spectrum. Appropriate use of herbicides permits to receive standard and qualitative planting material at significant reduction of terms and cost price of its growth.
Federal State-Funded Institution SPbNIILH is developing practical recommendations (inter alia, regional ones) on weed control using the modern herbicides in open bed nurseries, as well as conducts training of specialists how to use them practically.
Development and refinement of herbicides application in forest areas technologies
At different stages of practical-valuable forest stands reproduction, the removal (the restriction of development) of undesirable grass, tree and shrubbery vegetation is required. Most critically, this problem arises, as you know, when clear cutting and in productive forest conditions. To solve this problem, it is prospectively to use herbicides during areas preparation for planting crops, with their agronomic, silvicultural and complex handling when mixed young stands of natural origin felling and reconstruction of subsidiary crops, during stands composition and thickness in polewood phase regulation, as well as in mature stands before cutting – to prevent vegetative regeneration of broadleaved species on clearcuts. Herbicides one-time application provides the economically-valuable species domination, significantly reduces management cost and multiply reduces performance rate in comparison to traditional methods of management.

Biological evaluation of new herbicides and development of regulations of their use in forestry and on non-agricultural lands
For herbicides state registration and their inclusion in the current Catalogue... their biological assessment and development of technology regulations are required. For this purpose the field tests are conducted where effectiveness, spectrum, and duration of herbicides effect on undesirable (weed) grass and tree vegetation are determined. In addition, in the forest estate land, the selective ability of action in relation to tree species under cultivation is estimated.
Federal State-Funded Institution SPbNIILH engages in search of new promising herbicides, conducts biological assessment and develops regulations of their application on the forest estate land and on the non-agricultural lands.
Development of Sosnowsky's cow-parsnip control methods and technologies on the lands of different categories
During recent 10-15 years, in a number of regions of Russia including the northwest of the European part, the disastrous dissemination of former cultivated Sosnowsky's cow-parsnip takes place, causing dermatitises dangerous for human health. The cow-parsnip actively occupies not cultivated agricultural areas, right-of-ways of highways and rail roads, lands of urban settlements, and forest area. The mechanical control measures are not only ineffective but also dangerous. Application of a chemical method is the only real possibility to win over a cow-parsnip. Efficient technology of its control is developed and improved. It allows not only to remove cow-parsnip fully but also to form a lawn from cereal grasses on its place.
