It will be possible to control the forest fires in Karelia from the air. Petrozavodsk engineers together with scientists of the St. Petersburg Forestry Research Institute have constructed a pilotless helicopter which is capable to monitor the Karelian forests from a birds-eye view.

The Saint-Petersburg Forestry Research Institute received a congratulatory address from the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) in the view of 85th anniversary of the Institute and the opening of IV International Scientific and Practical Conference “Innovation and Technology in Forestry 2014” (ITF-2014).

On 7-9 May 2014 a workshop of the project “FRISK-GO”: “Defining a role of future Platform for European forest risk in the field of forest fire protection” was held in Barcelona. The host of the event was the branch of the European Forest Institute in Germany (EFFICINET).

A grand meeting dedicated to 211th anniversary of University establishment will be held at the Saint-Petersburg Kirov Forest Engineering University on 30 May, 2014. The director of FBI “SPFRI” Igor A. Vasilyev will participate in this event with congratulatory speech of behalf of the Institute.

On 27-28 of May, 2014, the Saint-Petersburg Forestry Research Institute (FBI “SPbFRI”) with the support of the Federal Forestry Agency held the international scientific and practical conference “Innovation and Technology in Forestry” (ITF-2014). The event was dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Institute.

(17-20 April 2014, Khabarovsk) Delegates of Saint-Petersburg Forestry Research Institute, Alexander A. Steptchenko, Deputy Director for Regional Development and Ivan K. Petrov, Head of International Technologies Science and Research Department, took part in the Far East International Forestry Congress “The Far East Forestry Development Strategy”.

On 10 April 2014 a meeting of Institute scientists with group of University of Eastern Finland University students and their supervisor Timo Karjalainen, Professor of Finland Forest Research Institute (Metla) took place in Saint-Petersburg Forestry Research Institute.

On 8 April 2014 the meeting of management and scientists of Saint-Petersburg Forestry Research Institute and Northwestern Federal District Forestry Department with Swedish Forest Agency representatives Lars Andersson and Per Hazell took place in Saint-Petersburg Forestry Research Institute.

Igor A. Vasilyev, Saint-Petersburg Forestry Research Institute Director and Alexander A. Steptchenko, Deputy Director for Regional Development participate in the main business event of the year concerning the field of forestry: Arkhangelsk Forestry Forum–2014. Alexander A. Steptchenko will make a report on the subject “New Technologies and Equipment for Forestry Needs” on the first day of the event in the plenary session.
